Swiss Army Man (2016) Synopsis: The film starts with shots of several items floating in the middle of the ocean. Swiss Army Man 2016 They have little messages written on them by someone stating that they are hungry, bored, and they don’t want to die alone.

On a deserted island, Hank Thompson (Paul Dano) is getting ready to hang himself. Swiss Army Man 2016 He then sees the body of a young man (Daniel Radcliffe) wash up on the shore. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank attempts to walk over, but he forgets he’s got a noose around his neck and he is almost hung until the rope snaps. Swiss Army Man 2016 He runs to the young man and checks for a pulse, but he’s dead. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank hears a rumbling sound from inside the man’s body, and the corpse farts. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank takes the belt off the man’s pants and uses it to try and hang himself again. Swiss Army Man 2016 However, the corpse continues to fart so much that it moves a little. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank runs back to the corpse and uses his farts to ride away from the island like a jet ski. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank loses his balance and falls into the water.

Hank wakes up in a different location near the woods. Swiss Army Man 2016 He thinks the corpse has saved him. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank brings the corpse into a cave as it rains that night. Swiss Army Man 2016 The corpse appears to be collecting water in his mouth while sticking his tongue out.

In the morning, Hank gets thirsty. Swiss Army Man 2016 The corpse starts spewing water from his mouth. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank drinks it in a cup he found. Swiss Army Man 2016 He thanks the corpse and starts talking to him. Swiss Army Man 2016 The corpse replies with a groggy, “Okay, buddy”, leading Hank to scream and punch him in the face. Swiss Army Man 2016 The corpse starts mumbling, making it sound like he is saying “Manny”, so Hank starts calling him that. Swiss Army Man 2016 He thinks he may just be hallucinating from starvation, but he starts trying to get Manny to remember anything he can about life.

Hank carries Manny on his back as they walk through the woods. Swiss Army Man 2016 He reminds Manny of various aspects about life, like pooping and sex. Swiss Army Man 2016 Manny sees a picture of a sports magazine with a beautiful woman in the pages. Swiss Army Man 2016 He gets an erection that Hank uses as a compass to guide him away.

On their walk, Hank steps in a pile of poo, and he then hears what sounds like a bear growling. Swiss Army Man 2016 In a panicked fit, Hank and Manny tumble down a hill. Swiss Army Man 2016 After the fall, Manny sees Hank’s phone in a plastic bag, which Manny thinks belonged to him. Swiss Army Man 2016 The wallpaper shows a woman named Sarah (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whom Hank would always see on the bus sitting by herself. Swiss Army Man 2016 He took the picture of her secretly. Swiss Army Man 2016 Manny falls in love with Sarah, now finding motivation to get home.

Hank begins to remind Manny what it feels like to love. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank dresses up to look like Sarah so Manny can talk to “her”. Swiss Army Man 2016 Manny is awkward and doesn’t know how to talk to women. Swiss Army Man 2016 The two also discuss topics like masturbation and family members, including how Hank’s mom died and he doesn’t have the best relationship with his dad. Swiss Army Man 2016 It gets unpleasant when Manny makes a connection between masturbating and Hank’s mom, causing Hank to yell at him. Swiss Army Man 2016 He apologizes for that, though.

In the woods, Hank starts to build several structures, like a bus, a theater, and a cafe. Swiss Army Man 2016 On the bus, Hank plays out with Manny what it’s like to see Sarah getting on the bus and trying to find the courage to talk to her.

Hank starts to use Manny like a multi-purpose tool, like hunting for food by shooting things out of Manny’s mouth, chopping wood with his arms, and lighting farts with fire. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank puts on a shadow puppet theater performance of movies like “Jurassic Park” and “E.T.” for Manny.

The two start to cross a pipe above a river. Swiss Army Man 2016 The pipe breaks, and the two fall into the river. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank tries to get air from Manny before they are shot to the surface by Manny’s farts. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank then sticks something into Manny’s mouth and shoots it out to use as a grappling hook to climb up a hill.

Hank finally gets a signal on his phone. Swiss Army Man 2016 He has gotten a birthday message from his dad. Swiss Army Man 2016 He goes on Instagram and looks at Sarah’s profile. Swiss Army Man 2016 She has a husband and a daughter. Swiss Army Man 2016 When Manny learns about this, he feels upset for Hank making him think that he was going to get a chance to be with Sarah. Swiss Army Man 2016 The two go up a tree when a bear shows up and claws Manny’s leg. Swiss Army Man 2016 Up the tree, Manny starts crying after feeling deceived. Swiss Army Man 2016 He says he wishes he were dead again. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank spots a town not far from where they are, and he tries to get the attention of passing cars. Swiss Army Man 2016 The branch then breaks and Hank twists his leg. Swiss Army Man 2016 The bear starts to carry him away until Manny drops from the tree and starts moving on his own. Swiss Army Man 2016 He lights one of his farts on fire and scares the bear away. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank passes out.

Hank wakes up to find Manny carrying him away from the woods and close to a house. Swiss Army Man 2016 The house is Sarah’s. Swiss Army Man 2016 The two tumble down the hill in the backyard. Swiss Army Man 2016 They are met by Sarah’s daughter Chrissy (Antonia Ribero). Swiss Army Man 2016 She can apparently communicate with Manny as well. Swiss Army Man 2016 Manny creeps her out with his water-puking and spontaneous boners, causing Chrissy to cry. Swiss Army Man 2016 Sarah comes out and sees Hank and Manny. Swiss Army Man 2016 Manny is no longer responsive. Swiss Army Man 2016 Sarah gets help to come.

Paramedics, cops, and a news crew show up at Sarah’s house. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank’s dad arrives and sees the body bag with Manny in it, thinking Hank is in there. Swiss Army Man 2016 He goes to his car and cries. Swiss Army Man 2016 The reporter starts to interview Hank over his experience. Swiss Army Man 2016 The cops then look at Hank’s phone and see pictures of Sarah, which freaks her out. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank ignores everyone and runs to Manny’s body, taking it back into the woods. Swiss Army Man 2016 Everyone follows them and walks past all the things that Hank built. Swiss Army Man 2016 They make it back to the shore where Hank and Manny first washed up on. Swiss Army Man 2016 Hank doesn’t want anyone to take Manny away. Swiss Army Man 2016 An officer cuffs Hank and takes him away. Swiss Army Man 2016 Some farting is heard, and everyone sees Manny moving as he farts violently. Swiss Army Man 2016 His farts then send him away across the ocean. Swiss Army Man 2016 Everyone looks confused and disturbed, except for Hank’s dad, Chrissy, and Hank, who all react with a smile.

  1. cinemacy from United States says:

Usually, fart jokes are associated with bad raunchy comedies in thelikes of Adam Sandler’s recent career, or really uncreative familymovies. Insert, ‘Swiss Army Man’ – the Sundance title that’s generatedthe most vocal reaction amongst festival goers for it’s ridiculous, nowinfamous, farting dead body played by Daniel Radcliffe. This is onlyhow the film begins, and let’s just say it toots even louder fromthere.

Paul Dano plays Hank, a man lost on an island. Right when he’s about togive up on life, he discovers the aforementioned farting body and findsan unexpected answer to why his life is worth living. He discovers thatmany elements of this body can help him survive and find a way backhome, and keeps himself sane (or perhaps insane) by talking to it.

The writer/director duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectivelyknown as “the Daniels”, have a reputation for ridiculous and highlyentertaining short films and music videos, and this feature representsa conglomerate of numerous ideas that sound bad yet somehow all work.As Hank develops a relationship with the dead body (one that starts outsimilar to Wilson in Cast Away), the intriguing absurdity keeps youengaged for the rest of the film. This is the type of film best seenwith little information beyond the initial premise, as it is full ofmystery boxes waiting to be unraveled. Thanks to the great use oflocations and production design, the world- building is fantastic andthe wackiness becomes downright fun.

On top of being a silly movie that doesn’t pretend to take itselfseriously, ‘Swiss Army Man’ sneaks in themes of societal behavior andwhat is considered weird vs. what is normal. It’s rare to find a moviethat is so unpredictable in an engaging way, and because the moviebegins with something so ridiculous and only goes deeper from there, itallows for limitless ideas on what is going to happen next andcontinues to be fun to watch. The reason the film may be polarizing isbecause of how silly it all is, but going in knowing it will be thisway is all you need to jump in and enjoy the show. There is little moreto say without giving too much away – essentially, if you can acceptabsurdity and be along for the ride, this movie may just sneak up andtreat you to a great time overall.

  2. goolizap from United States says:

If you watched the trailer for this film, you’re probably aware thatit’s going to be pretty weird. Though you never expect it to be thisweird.

The uniquely and refreshingly strange tone is established right away.Paul Dano plays Hank, a young man who is stuck on an island about tocommit suicide when he sees a dead body (Daniel Radcliffe) washed up onshore. Long story short, he discovers that this corpse has specialabilities. It can satiate his thirst, chop wood in half, spit bulletsout of its mouth, among other things. Soon, the body starts to talk.

For almost the entirety of the movie we’re trying to figure out if Danois simply hallucinating or if the corpse really is coming to life. Manydetails are left for the imagination. But they don’t even reallymatter.

Much of the film is spent with Dano teaching Radcliffe about the worldand how amazing it is. Yet Dano becomes conflicted as this is the sameworld he was trying to leave. Radcliffe has already left and wants tobe back in it. They’re passing each other going in opposite directions.

The filmmakers never have an issue keeping the surreal tone of themovie. The only problem comes in the end where it seems as though, unsure of where to wrap things up, it strays a little and becomesslightly disjointed.

Even if you think you know where the story is going, you never do.That’s what makes it so great. It gives you what you could never everexpect. There are times it gets almost too weird–even for thisfilm–but then again, there’s nothing like it, so what do we reallycompare it to?

It’s never the weirdness that makes you not like the film. If anything,it could be the fact that it never truly says what it means to–orwants to. But in a universe so loose and free, you sort of have to beable to read between the lines.

    Twizard Rating: 95

  3. rafaeltamir from Israel says:

A masterpiece its clear to me that some will disqualify the film as aserious and well through new art expose . but as i wipe the tears of mycheeks i think how relevant and true is the so simple story and actionsof the heroes all trough the plot. how sad is to live in a 7 billionpeople world and still to fill so alone that any one would choose toapart from the gift of live. an yet we the audience are asked to do solittle and be part of a miracle and that’s by giving and believing inany human on earth. Loved it; touched by it .(cudos to the writer ;actors ; director and participants ) thanks and please keep the goodwork. ?

  4. BecauseIAmBATMAN from delhi says:

One of the most insanely creative and original film ever. Its oftenstrange with crude humour about farting corpses and boners, but therecertainly is a deeper meaning to it rather than being crudeness for thesake of it.

This film is truly a magical experience that dares to defy conventions. Its a thought provoking film that would make you question ourconventions and need to be normal while exploring loneliness. Withbeautiful cinematography, powerful performances by Paul Dano and DanielRadcliffe, well paced with an excellent soundtrack this certainly is myfavourite film of the year (so far).

Its certainly not everyone, it wouldn’t be surprising if most peopledismissed it saying ‘What the hell’. Certainly recommended if you areinto quirky, offbeat and creative films.

  5. kuarinofu from Ukraine says:

I knew nothing about this movie. I didn’t see the trailer and I didn’tread any info on it. I just wanted to experience it “as is”. I lovedit. And believe me, it wasn’t perfect, it had its flaws. Yet it wasvery original and it had a lot to offer. It’s a very sad and depressingstory mixed with some juvenile humour and laughs that make you feellike you’re 10 y.o. again. Its message is very clear and it even statesits points a couple of times so you will never feel confused. It’s ahumble movie. It’s not trying to be a thought-provoking complex story,it only tries to understand what makes us continue to move forward andlive our imperfect and sometimes miserable lives. If not for the humourand Radcliffe’s performance this movie would’ve been too dark andheavy, but the directors knew what they were doing and it did work forme.

  6. Ezekiel Salzen from United States says:

Like abnormal? See this. Like intelligent? See this. Like funny. SEETHIS! Swiss Army Mans diversity was not only noticeable but itsstrangeness was not only quirky but hilarious. This is easily the bestcomedy of 2016. It has Daniel Radcliffe who was perfect for Manny, andPaul Dano who was also perfect for Hank. I swear there is no way oftelling this is Daniels first film from the perfected direction andwriting. The humor has funny build up and is really farcical. I thinkthis film did everything correctly with how it wanted to do it. Irecommend this to film goers who like strange but intact.

    11/10 Golden Potato

  7. Matthew Luke Brady from a review says:

“If my best friend hides his farts from me then what else is he hidingfrom me, and why does that make me feel so alone?”

Never would I expect a farting talking corpse would’ve turn out to be agood movie. Even on paper, this idea sounds awful, but it’s one ofthose things that manages to work out. I always hear people complainthat movies just ain’t that original anymore, with the endless rebootsand the unnecessary squeals. And then you get something like thisthat’s so different. Something so bizarre, weird and original that it’sexecuted in a way that it actually works as a movie.

There’s something deeply beautiful and very relatable about “Swiss ArmyMan” that I know a lot of people won’t agree. It isn’t for everybody. Imean, just look at the reviews for Sundance and the reports of walkouts during the movie. But then again, what do they know.

Daniel Scheinert & Daniel Kwan bring a sweet and a very surreal studyof the human condition that’s done so uniquely. Making farts jokes seemso poetic.

This is Daniel Radcliffe at his best and while he’s character may bedead, there’s still heart within him. Paul Dano who really has beenimpressing me over the past years is really great in this. Radcliffeand Dano brought a sense of friendship and a real chemistry that afterawhile it kinda over shadows the wackiness of whats going on. Somepeople may find the scenes between them too disturbing or creepy, and Ican totally understand that. But it’s something that’s hard to explainreally. Even if you try to put together why something like this worked, but it never fully clicks in your head as the correct answer. Well, what can I say. Movies make you feel something man.

Overall rating: I’m no gonna lie, I teared up a bit while watchingthis. Yes, a farting corpse movie actually made laugh, cry and thinkdifferently on things.

    WOW.

  8. www.ramascreen.com from United States says:

When you look up the word ‘original’ in your dictionary, you might finda poster of SWISS ARMY MAN next to the definition. This is simply thebest movie of 2016 in my book. It’s outrageous, it’s visionary, it’sfull of humor and heart. To those of you who often complain thatthere’s nothing original to watch in theaters anymore,writing/directing team Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have come tothe rescue.

Paul Dano plays Hank, stranded on a deserted island, about to commitsuicide because to him, all hope is lost. And suddenly he sees a corpsenamed Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) who changes everything. Hank isdetermined to use his new multipurpose friend to go on an epicadventure that Hank hopes would bring him back to the woman of hisdreams.

Brought to you by the guys behind “Turn Down For What” video, SWISSARMY MAN is what happens when you let filmmakers run wild with theiractive imagination. It’s a story about a man scared to take chances onlove and life until a dead man who farts a lot has to show him how muchfun letting loose and taking chances can be despite the outcome.Writing/directing team, simply known as DANIELS, pack this film withall kinds of surprises, like one of those nesting dolls, just when youthought you’ve seen what Manny can do, he can do another thing andanother and it doesn’t stop. And I’d like to see it as DANIELSchanneling their limitless creativity through Dano’s character, Hank, because Hank is the one who’s got the skills to utilize Manny in orderto create something that’s either fun or simply useful.

Never have I seen a movie that celebrates farting as much as this. Somemight dismiss SWISS ARMY MAN as absurd but this film wears absurdityproudly like a badge of honor. And to me the fart jokes and the corpsejokes, the erection jokes, they even have Jurassic Park jokes, are alljust the vehicle that drives this friendship story. You have onecharacter who’s dead inside, and one character who’s literally dead, interacting in a way that looks insane to some, but DANIELS crafted ina way that makes Hank and the audiences feel hopeful at the end. Sothis ain’t some kind of “Weekend At Bernie’s” long lost cousin. PaulDano and Daniel Radcliffe fully immerse themselves in DANIELS’ vision, although I’m sure at first they may have had trouble imagining whatthey read on the script. But the commitment of those two actors isevident on screen, they don’t hold back. Accompanied by fantastic andsuper catchy score/soundtrack, SWISS ARMY MAN is a cinematiccelebration that you can’t get enough of. Bound to be a favorite tomany; bound to be an instant classic.

  9. freekyfridays from United States says:

The Jury Prize for Best Directing caused more than a few controversiesat this year’s Sundance Film Festival with some audience memberswalking out, while others complained about the film’s uncouth behavior. What might get lost in the mix is how impressively this unique anduncompromised debut feature can be seen through completely oppositelenses.

One way of responding to SWiSS ARMY MAN could be to contagiously laughat the screwball actions of Hank (Paul Dano), a man stranded on adesert island with a dead body (Daniel Radcliffe). Another way would beto question Hank’s reliability as a narrator and view this surreal, spiritual spiral as an existential journey into complete madness.Either way, Daniel Radcliffe’s performance as a dead body is the kindof profound achievement you might expect from a Harold Pinter or SamuelBeckett play.

Swiss Army Man is not just the most infamous film at Sundance thisyear; It is the perfect Hollywood calling card for first timefilmmakers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinart, as well as being a completelyneo-sincere film. Movie lovers should put aside all of its buzz andjust experience it for themselves. Love it or hate it, it’s one filmfrom 2016 that most definitely will not be forgotten.

Review taken from 2016 Sundance Film Festival wrap up.

  10. PyroSikTh from Cheddar says:

This is a movie who’s concept sounds awful on paper; A man stranded onan island befriends a corpse with magical powers that washes up on thebeach and they try to find their way back to civilisation together. Andyet the trailer held the promise of something much deeper under theinherent silliness. Nevertheless, while I was prepared for a bizarreouting, Swiss Army Man turned out to be even weirder than I expected.Even after having slept on it, I’m still not sure what to make of it.

The bulk of the movie is Hank, a lonely, suicidal man, stranded awayfrom civilisation, travelling through a forest with a dead body guidingthe way. The body seems to supply Hank with everything he needs, likeprojectile spit for water, or the ability to shoot harpoons from hismouth. In return, Hank teaches Manny, the corpse, all about love, life, and what is socially acceptable (pro-tip, it’s not farting orerections). It comes to light that Hank has a crush for a girl he sawon the bus, who he has become somewhat fixated with, and so Manny byextension becomes fixated with as well, and they roleplay variousscenarios that never happened.

Swiss Army Man is labelled as a comedy, so there are jokes, and it isreasonably light-hearted. Unfortunately, bar a few choice moments, thehumour did absolutely nothing for me. In fact I would go so far as tosay it kind of ruined the experience for me. The humour in Swiss ArmyMan isn’t just crude, it’s juvenile. Crude humour I can deal with, butjuvenile humour is just not my dish. The biggest running joke of thewhole movie is that Manny farts a lot. He’s a dead body full ofdecomposition gases, of course he farts a lot. But you know, farting isfunny so that makes this a comedy right? Erections as well, Manny getserections when he looks at pictures of half-naked women, and that’sfunny too, obviously.

Thing is, while this juvenile humour took me out of the moviecompletely, and is not my kind of humour at all, I can at leastunderstand it’s reasoning. Half the movie’s message is about what isand isn’t socially acceptable. Farting and getting an erection inpublic are generally considered big taboos, but the movie’s point iswhy? They’re natural processes of the human body and shouldn’t beashamed of. Everyone farts. Everyone poops. Everyone masturbates. Ifeveryone does it, why is everyone so worried about other people knowingit? As movie messages go, it’s a fairly unique one to approach.

The acting is pretty top-notch across the board though. Paul Dano doeswhat he does best as the nerdy, shy Hank. He shows a real turmoil, andhis conversations with a dead body are so natural. For me though, thestar of the show is Daniel Radcliffe who once again goes out of his wayto separate himself from the Harry Potter image. His dead bodyimpression is the most accurate I’ve seen. They had a dummy available, but he insisted on doing most of it himself, and it shows. Hisfloppiness is unmatched, and his ability to move his body in unnaturalways and resist any kind of flinching is really impressive. On the moreemotional side though, he shows a fantastic sense of innocence andcuriosity that obviously mirrors Hank’s own psyche.

The last thing I’ll note is the soundtrack, which is almost entirelyacapella. It’s spurned on by the two characters themselves, layered upfrom sounds they make and notes they hum and harmonise together. There’s one moment in particular that uses a full acapella version ofthe Jurassic Park theme, and that alone almost makes the movie worthwatching.

I’m still not sure what to make of Swiss Army Man. It has it’s goodmoments and it’s bad moments. Fundamentally it is simply one of themost unique and original movies on the market. The Daniels’ ability totake what sounds like such a god-awful concept and work it intosomething that’s almost deep and moving is impressive. It’s biggest sinis that it simply doesn’t make a whole load of sense and makes noeffort to try and explain anything, instead opting to offer opposingclues to cement different interpretations, making any interpretationnull and void. Was it a story about a man and his dead body findingtheir way back home, or was it a story about a man and his dead bodyobsessing over a girl they don’t know and being driven mad byloneliness? Even now I’m left clueless. It was a find movie ofself-discovery right up until the third act when it just stopped makingany kind of sense at all. I give Swiss Army Man a conflicted 6/10.
